THE HUMAN FIGURE

PROCEDURES
Explain to students that the unit used define the proportions of the average human figure is the length of the head from the top of the skull to the chin. The average adult is 7and one-half heads tall.
Explain to students the Golden Mean, a ratio (1to 1.6) considered by the ancient Greeks to be the ideal proportion, and it relationship to the human figure (when dividing the average human figure at the navel, the resulting measurements have a ratio of 1 to 1.6).
1. Lightly sketch on paper guidelines for the human figure (horizontal lines to measure seven and one-half heads tall).
2. Sketch in parts of body in correct positions.
3. Refine drawing to present proportions and details of actual subject.
4. Erase guidelines and complete drawing in chosen medium.
